How do you use edutaining / serialized marketing in your business? Tell a story & you will build a following. Followers will share & you will get a boost. Many times it will be a big boost. Sometimes it will go viral.

Back in 2010 I was asked to help promote a newspaper conference and trade show in Tucson, AZ. I was asked if I could raise the bar and get more people here than in the last few years.

One thing you need to know was that in 2008, with the downturn of the economy, the bottom fell out of many of the newspaper publisher’s markets. For the last two years we had less people coming and for the last decade, western U.S. conferences (even though they were in San Fransisco, San Diego and Seattle) were down by 20% even before the downturn occurred. This was due to most of the publishers and newspapers were on the eastern half of the country.

Serialized marketing

I accepted the challenge and knocked it out of the park.  We increased the attendance by 22% over the year before. This was 10% above the pre-downturn people that came in 2007 and that conference was an east coast conference.

Here is the video – If you want to see the serialized story that I used, email me.

The reason?

Two reasons – 1) A multi part promotion like what Andy is doing for WebinarJam. We did a serial story that was seven weeks of building up to a hidden treasure at the conference. We finally sent a video that captured the imagination and people responded by attending.

2) We booked a great speaker and then promoted the heck out of that as well between our serialized story.

Now know I didn’t do the conference myself. I had many people that were helping with it but my job was to get people excited to get them to come to this conference.

The theme “Come to the old west to discover the treasure in Tucson” grabbed the imagination of the publishers and their staff. While there was only 176 people that watched the video, we had almost 800 people come and the theme was carried out throughout the conference. I still get people that tell me how much fun that theme and conference was.
